Fearing that he and his men were about to be arrested, Hidalgo gathered his congregation in his church in the early morning hours of September 16th. Once all were gathered, he made a rousing speech, calling for la independencia, independence, and urged the people to revolt against the Spanish. Four days later, the first battle in the war against Spain occurred.

Mexico’s actual independence from Spain would not be official until more than ten years after Father Hidalgo’s memorable speech. Now, on the anniversary of that speech that sparked the drive for Mexico’s freedom, people gather to celebrate the strength and tenacity of their country.
